Emerson Lake – first 3 shows cancelled!

I have said it before many times: you get little reward for being a fervent ELP fan. It’s bad enough that (if you live long enough) you wait 15 years between tours then when the tour comes round it stutters to a false start.

Some people in Cleveland are a bit pissed off that that they drove 200 miles to the gig to be told it was cancelled at the last minute. I have spent months making all sorts of arrangements, and a fair amount of money, to fly from Glasgow, Scotland to New York to see the gig at The Nokia Theatre.

How angry do you think I’ll be if that gig is cancelled!

For sure it must have been incredibly disappointing and frustrating to get to the gig and waiting on it all happening only to be told that there is no gig. I have never heard of such circumstances in all the gigs I have  attended over 30 years.

It seems particularly irksome that there seems no good reason forthcoming at this point….. at least not yet anyway. There is a lot of speculation about in fighting but I personally don’t believe that. They must have been rehearsing for weeks before the tour and would have cleared up all artistic disagreements before this point.

Furthermore after the amount of time they have been in the business, they must have a degree of professionalism that would have overcome petty arguments.

I mean, even Roger Waters and Pink Floyd played music together at Live 8 in a professional manner and look how much abuse they had hurled at each other over the years. Even if you hate each other it is still entirely possible (and good for your career and reputation) to get over that and go and get the  job done. Yes the show must go on. Its is an entertainment cliche but it is true

My view is that it is some kind of health issue, bureaucratic issue or something more important than Emerson and Lake swinging handbags at each other. The management press release mentioned at cleveland.com states that the tour will continue from Monday at Annapolis MD. If you have an arguement you don’t generally agree a date for  a truce do you?

In the modern business/celebrity arena people are very cautious about opening their gob until they have worked out the ‘best outcome scenario’: check out Tiger Woods or these English footballers and their wives. And given how little ELP ever tell the world anything, it is not suprising that no info is forthcoming. I mean they barely told anyone about the bloody tour! All the fans had to find out via the jungle drums and private detectives and then passed information around the  Secret Society!

Let’s hope the tour continues on Monday and the long suffering fans get what they deserve: some ELP music played by EL(P): that’s it – surely not too much to ask!

Otherwise any one fancy a beer with a jetlagged scotsman in Time Square NYC on Thursday night?……. cos I may have a few spare hours to spare!

I was at the “show” in Cleveland last night. This whole thing is very bewildering. I paid a large sum of money for a front row ticket, with Keith’s keyboards just 15 feet away, and also a meet and greet package where I would finally have Keith and Greg’s signatures on my copy of Brain Salad Surgery, which had been previously sutographed by Carl.
By the way Brian, I LOVE Scotland!!

  2. April 2nd, 2010 at 21:28 | #2

Dave. I missed the opportunity for the meet and greet package because (surprise, surprise) they announced that after I bought my ticket. I really sympathise with you guys that turned up last night. That must have been a real bummer. I did hear a rumour that GL hadn’t got a work permit but I cant substantiate that!.
Are you gonna go to another show, get a refund or wait for a reschedule?

  3. April 2nd, 2010 at 22:01 | #3

I’m hoping that the show is re-scheduled, and the my ticket will still be good. The nearest other show I could go to is over 6 hours away.
Last night would have been the crowning moment in my 36 Years of concert going (ELP was the very first in 1974). It ended up being the biggest concert disappointment.

Also, cancelled here in CT for tomorrow night (Sat. 4/3). I’ll just wait for the next show (wherever, whenever)…what’s a few more decades?

I did the broadcast quality sound at California Jam. It’s bigger than rock ‘n roll!

Totally lacking in class. If they were to give a free concert right now across the street from my house I wouldn’t go. What an unprofessional thing to do to their devoted fan base. I have no use for these gentlemen any more…and I was a big fan. WAS a big fan.

I was there in Lakewood (Cleveland) on 4/1. Disappointing to say the least. I’m the one who was told by security that there was some arguing between Lake and Emerson during the sound check and then the notice of cancellation. I’m still having a hard time believing or accepting this as a reason, but as time goes on and there’s not much news or announcement from L&P, I’m left to think the worst. I hope they are able to fix whatever situation has prevented them from performing last night, and go on to play their other shows as scheduled. However, I will not plan to attend any future performances. I will always be a fan of the incredible music they’ve provided over the years, but I’m certainly not a fan of who they’ve become.

I to have tickets for the CT show and had friends coming up from New Jersey as well to see these legends! I was at a show back in the 90’s at Oakdale in CT when Lake decided things weren’t to his liking and walked off the stage. Don;t get me wrong – I love ELP but if infighting was the contributing factor to the three shows being cancelled – it is unforgiveable and completely off the mark. No matter what differences they have – they agreed to tour and need to both grow up and be professional. If it weren’t for us fans – they would be nothing.

KE Band cancelled last summers tour because of hand problems GL cancelled back in 1980 or 1981 I think the story was lack of ticket sales if this keeps up we’ll have another 12 year wait

Yes, Joe and I had front row seats to see the Keith Emerson Band at Ridgfield..they cancelled because of Keiths hand..I can understand that and I’m sorry about Keith’s mom..So anyway we got refunded..We didn’t know that they honored the tickets from that show for tonight’s cancelled performance. We did get tickets not front row…but I hope that they get it together…would of been real nice if Palmer was there maybe he could have broke up the fight…I do have Asia tickets.

    @Ernest
Ernest, ernest,Ernest….If you like the band as you say. And state, “I’m left to think the worst. What does that mean? you said that you wont go to any future shows, and you will always be a fan of their incredible music. Kind of shooting yourself in the foot? Does the future include a reschedule that you have a ticket to. your “not a fan of who they have become” your whiney judgemental and self defeating ,pal.Tell us who have they become. You cant tell us because you dont know. I think you’ll change you mind if they come back. “not a fan of who they have become” that’s kind of pathetic that you would say that. Enjoy the show.

Brian,(the Scottsman uptop, proprieter of this blog?) had made many good points that most people dont realize, or think. of. one being “If you have an arguement, you dont genereally agree on,dont generally agree on a date for a truce do you?” I mentioned this on another site on the 2nd It was the last comment up to now. I dont know what that means. There is all this “squabble theory”( god if it is true I hope they cover it up) why foam at the mouth at Keith and Greg, before the truth is revealed. (by the way Brian’s comment about “swinging handbags at each other” was great. Instead there is a lot of moaning, whining and anger from “fans” they did rehearse in La for days or weeks? and at Cleveland. and the concert was announced,in enough advance to fill up some of,at least the venues chosen.(Ernest-hang in there, buddy)It was announced on several ELP related websites. The stage was set folks they relly intended to play, for some folks in Ohio. Obviously something made this inoperable.
I read somewhere, that the first 3 shows will be rescheduled. (sorry I forgot where I read it) If this happens I hope the serious mouth foamers
dont get unruley, especially at “meet and greet”. with shoving motel and gas reciets, At E&L, sorry I,m having a bad waking dream. My best to all involved. I think I’ll shut up, and perhaps headphone to Tarkus

I only ask because I would like to know. nothing against you. I know I am asking a lot.

Does anyone know if they performed Monday, April 5th at the Ram’s Head in Annapolis? It was the 4th gig on the tour itinerary.

    Thanks in advance!

They blew off tonight’s show at the Birchmere also. Claiming “health issues”. But things are improving, they cancelled with almost 2 hours notice before the show. I’m confident we’ll know if egos are tamed and professionalism emerges well before the rescheduled May 9th date.

It happened AGAIN… last night in Alexandria. A lengthy line of anxious ELP fans were waiting for hours outside The Birchmere, when, at precisely 5:10pm a rep. from the club came out to announce to the stunned group, that “tonight’s show is cancelled because Mr. Lake cannot perform due to an illness.” What can I say but… WELCOME BACK MY FRIENDS, TO THE SHOW THAT NEVER BEGINS!!!!!!

I saw them last night at the Nokia theater in NYC. I was unaware of the problems till the woman next to me told me about the cancellations. Well, the troubles continued, as they came out over an hour late. The did about a 30 minute set, said they’d take a 10 minute break, came back after 30 minutes, and spent half of the time doing a Q&A. There was way too much banter and filler.

Kieth is way below par. His hand problem is still there. Watch his right hand and you’ll see. Lake was great and the biggest treat was him doing “I Talk To the Wind”.

If you take the price of the ticket and divide by the number of notes played, it was by far the most expensive show I’ve ever been to.

Man…did the show at Nokia go ahead…I hope so…

  20. April 10th, 2010 at 03:17 | #20

It certainly did and was an awesome show! Very different to a ‘regular’ ELP show. Lots of fun, humour, music, interaction with the audience and general camaraderie. The music was what it was all about. I’ll do a review later

I submitted a comment on 4/7, while I was still reeling at the shock of my girlfriend & I being turned away for the show in Alexandria the night before. I was a little pissed, but I will make the trek to see the rescheduled show on 5/9. You see, I am a devoted fan of ELP, and a foregiving one. My girlfriend, on the other hand (not a true fan) will not return with me to the show on 5/9, due to her own convictions. However… how’s this for irony – I will be taking my 15 yr old son to the 5/9 show for his 1st “concert”. It just so happens that my first concert was ELP in ’72, and guess how old/young I was then… yep – 15!!! I guess it was meant to be this way. The way I figure it, there will be several more appearances before then, which should give E & L plenty of time to fine-tune their performance. “C’est la vi”

Hopefully comments are reviewed before going live. I wouldn’t want my message to be seen as spam. ELP’s 40th Anniversary Reunion concert as performed at the High Voltage 2010 festival will be released as a Special DVD in late August. I’d be grateful if you would mention this on your blog.

Please feel free to contact me for more info.

    Thanks
